Public Health and Epidemiology

The Public Health and Epidemiology Research Group focuses on investigating the burden of diseases of public health importance and addressing major health challenges at both regional and international levels. Its research covers disease epidemiology, modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors, prevalence patterns, health outcomes, and evidence-based prevention and disease control strategies.

The group aims to generate scientific evidence that supports informed decision-making, improves population health outcomes, and contributes to the development of effective public health policies and interventions.

Epigenetics and Non-Communicable Diseases

Research in epigenetics focuses on genetic modifications induced by internal or external factors that result in heritable and metabolic effects with long-term health consequences. The group's research investigates the types, causes, mechanisms, manifestations, and outcomes of epigenetic modifications, while proposing practical solutions to address their effects, including chromosomal abnormalities and related disorders.

In the field of non-communicable diseases, the group possesses the expertise to conduct population-based, clinical, epidemiological, and molecular studies. Major research interests include vitamin D deficiency, metabolic syndrome, type 1 and type 2 diabetes, and other chronic diseases that significantly impact public health.

Process Design and Computational Engineering

This research group employs a wide range of analytical, computational, and experimental approaches to design, develop, and optimize sustainable, low-carbon, and near-zero-emission processes and products. Its research focus includes the design and development of industrial processes that minimize or eliminate carbon emissions while enhancing sustainability and operational efficiency.

The group also utilizes process modeling and simulation, process intensification, energy integration, energy efficiency analysis, and process optimization studies. Bringing together expertise from chemical engineering, chemistry, materials engineering, mathematics and statistics, computer science, and physics, the group adopts a multidisciplinary approach to address complex engineering challenges and support sustainable industrial development.

Process and Manufacturing Technology

The main research areas of this group include Computer-Aided Design (CAD), Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM), advanced manufacturing technologies, mechatronic systems design, automation, artificial intelligence in manufacturing, and the application of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies in manufacturing and process industries.

The group places particular emphasis on modern industry-driven technologies associated with Industry 4.0, including additive manufacturing, 3D printing, 4D printing, industrial automation, and robotics, with the aim of advancing smart and sustainable manufacturing systems.

Biomedical Engineering and Image Processing

This research group develops intelligent systems and artificial intelligence-based models to support healthcare professionals in disease detection and treatment planning. Its primary focus is on developing semi-automated and fully automated methods and frameworks for diagnosing diseases across various organs and medical specialties.

The group integrates biomedical imaging and biosignal-based approaches to assess disease conditions and monitor disease progression. In addition, it explores the application of nanotechnology, nanostructured materials, and nanostructured thin films in biomedical engineering and healthcare-related innovations.

Drug Discovery and Drug Delivery Systems

The Drug Delivery Systems Development Team is a multidisciplinary research group dedicated to designing and developing innovative drug delivery systems. Its research activities include the formulation and evaluation of novel drug delivery platforms, the development of herbal formulations, and the study of pharmacokinetic parameters and drug release characteristics.

The group also focuses on advanced research areas such as computer-aided drug design, in silico molecular modeling, ADMET prediction software, biological activity assessment, and other computational approaches that support the discovery and development of effective therapeutic agents.

Sustainable Construction Materials and Building Structures

This research group focuses on developing innovative, durable, and cost-effective methods for the repair, retrofitting, and construction of civil infrastructure. Key research activities include flexural and shear strengthening of reinforced concrete (RC) beams, retrofitting of short and long columns using ferrocement, slurry infiltrated fiber concrete (SIFCON), and fiber-reinforced polymers (FRP).

The group also focuses on the development of environmentally friendly geopolymer concrete using low-calcium fly ash and locally available activators as a complete replacement for conventional cement. The targeted research outcomes include practical solutions to global solid waste management challenges, reduction of carbon dioxide emissions, and the development of sustainable and affordable construction materials.

Reliability and Intelligent Maintenance Systems

This research group focuses on developing robust models for analyzing complex industrial systems and monitoring operational behavior to support the implementation of best practices in preventive and corrective maintenance. Its primary research interests include condition-based maintenance, automated fault diagnosis, functional failure detection, process instrumentation, and maintenance management.

The group’s expertise encompasses process sensors, smart instrumentation, process optimization, signal processing, embedded systems, intelligent condition monitoring, digital image processing, data fusion, and data modeling. It also applies artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques to address industrial challenges and enhance system reliability and operational efficiency.

Innovative Materials and Nanotechnology

This research group focuses on the synthesis of nanostructured materials and the application of nanoparticles and nanostructured thin-film technologies in biomedical, environmental, wastewater treatment, and corrosion prevention fields. A key objective is to translate laboratory-scale research into industrial-scale development of innovative products.

Research activities include the development of new materials derived from renewable plant- and crop-based resources, biomaterials, polymers, photocatalytic systems, waste treatment and management technologies, and sustainable resource utilization. The group emphasizes economically viable and environmentally sustainable solutions that support innovation and long-term development.

Artificial Intelligence, Automation, and Robotics

This research group conducts applied research in artificial intelligence and machine learning applications across science and engineering disciplines. Its areas of focus include automated planning, robotics, data mining, image processing, and the application of artificial intelligence in education, human resources, healthcare, medical systems, visual learning, computational systems, fault diagnosis, and safety and quality inspection.

The group's research activities primarily concentrate on industrial applications of deep learning, adaptive and intelligent systems, additive manufacturing, 3D and 4D printing, and the application of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies in manufacturing and process industries. The research also aims to optimize the performance and efficiency of complex industrial systems through advanced automation and intelligent technologies.
 

Renewable Energy and Energy Conversion Technologies

This research group aims to support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals through both fundamental and applied research in smart grid technologies, Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS), power electronics, clean energy, thermal systems, and energy conversion and management. The group's research scope also includes increasing and integrating wind farms into power systems, grid frequency dynamics, the penetration of hybrid renewable energy systems in both standalone and grid-connected applications, smart grid technologies, future energy storage systems including hydrogen production, and fuel cell applications.
 

Water resources, treatment and environment fields

This multidisciplinary group contributes to achieving sustainable development through the optimal use of natural resources and the transition towards a circular economy. It conducts research and consultancy on a wide range of water and environmental resources and related fields, including water resources, wastewater treatment technologies such as membrane technologies, desalination, membrane bioreactors, microbial fuel cells, modeling studies for wastewater recycling, and waste-to-materials and energy recycling technologies such as biogas production and the development of environmentally friendly materials.
