Data models provide a framework (structure) for the data used within information systems by defining data elements and specifying their format. When a data model is applied consistently across systems, it helps achieve data compatibility and interoperability. Using the same model for both data storage and access enables different applications to share data seamlessly.

These relationships and outcomes can be represented through diagrams and visual models. Conversely, poorly designed data models can hinder system and interface performance, leading to significant costs in the development, operation, and maintenance of systems and integrations.
