The Department of Medical Microbiology is proud of its outstanding contributions to scientific research and academic excellence. Our department is home to a distinguished group of faculty members whose expertise drives pioneering research that addresses critical health challenges in the region. Alongside research, we place strong emphasis on high quality teaching and learning. We are committed to delivering student centered education through innovative teaching strategies, modern laboratory training, problem-based learning and the effective use of educational technologies. Our goal is to equip students with strong scientific foundations, critical thinking skills and professional competencies needed for future careers in healthcare and research.
The department actively seeks to strengthen cooperation with national and international institutions to support its vision and mission. We also remain dedicated to community engagement through scientific consultations, training programs and public awareness initiatives. Through these efforts, we aim to support sustainable development and contribute meaningfully to the goals of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030.

The department contributes significantly to microbiology teaching through a 15-week para-clinical (foundation) module within the MBBS curriculum. This module covers core areas of medical microbiology, including bacteriology, mycology, virology, and parasitology, and is fully integrated with clinically relevant case-based learning.
In addition, the department is extensively involved in teaching across both pre-clinical and clinical years in several integrated modules, including IBLS, cardiovascular, respiratory, urinary, reproductive, and gastrointestinal System, as well as Patient Safety.
The department places strong emphasis on innovative educational approaches, particularly small-group learning and problem-based learning, to enhance student engagement and to develop clinically relevant knowledge, critical thinking and practical skills essential for future medical practice.

The department demonstrates a strong commitment to excellence in teaching, research and scholarly activities. The department actively participates in student orientation programs, providing early exposure to the fundamental principles of medical microbiology, laboratory safety and professional practice.
Teaching and learning are student-centered, with co-curricular and experiential activities integrated into core modules and clinical modules to enhance learning outcomes. These activities include problem-based learning, case-based learning, hands-on laboratory training and co-curricular activities designed to strengthen clinical reasoning and practical competencies. Faculty members actively mentor students in supervised research projects, fostering the development of research skills, critical thinking and scientific communication.

The department organises annual activities such as Microbiology Day, which provides a platform for students to interact with faculty members and peers through health-related discussions and knowledge exchange. This event promotes scientific awareness, collaborative learning, and engagement with current issues in medical microbiology. In addition, students are actively guided and supported to present their graduate research at national and international conferences, encouraging scholarly dissemination, professional development, and early involvement in scientific communication.
