The Department of Surgery is one of the core academic and clinical departments of the College of Medicine, and it represents a fundamental component of the Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) program. The department plays a pivotal role in clinical medical education by preparing and training medical students in the fundamental scientific principles, clinical knowledge, and surgical skills related to surgery and its subspecialties within the framework of integrated organ-system-based education and the clinical years of study.
The Department of Surgery is responsible for teaching and training students in the theoretical and clinical foundations of surgery, developing essential and advanced surgical skills, and enhancing effective professional communication skills with patients before, during, and after surgical procedures. The department’s curriculum is fully integrated with other college curricula to ensure that students acquire the knowledge and competencies required to meet the graduate outcomes of medical colleges in the Kingdom. This is achieved within an educational environment that adheres to scientific standards of evidence-based surgical medical education, with a strong focus on preparing graduates to practice medicine competently and efficiently.
The Department of Surgery offers structured educational curricula in surgery and its subspecialties as part of the College of Medicine study plan. These include integrated organ-system–based courses in the preclinical years, the Clinical Skills course, and the Surgery and Surgical Subspecialties course, which covers General surgery, Orthopedic surgery, Neurosurgery, and Urology. In addition, the department delivers dedicated courses in Otorhinolaryngology (ENT) and Ophthalmology.
The department’s educational programs emphasize interactive, small-group learning approaches that promote student engagement, critical clinical thinking, and hands-on training in diverse clinical settings, as well as in medical simulation centers.
The Department of Surgery highlights recent achievements of faculty members and students in the fields of medical education, anatomy, and scientific research. These achievements include research grants, academic awards, and publications in peer-reviewed journals related to surgery and medical education. The department also shares updates on curriculum innovations, educational initiatives, and collaborative efforts with other basic science and clinical disciplines.
The Department of Surgery organizes a wide range of scientific, educational, and awareness activities aligned with international health observances, such as Breast Cancer Awareness Month (Pink October) and Men’s Health Awareness Month (November). The department also actively participates in community service initiatives organized by the College of Medicine.
In addition, the department conducts training activities aimed at enhancing surgical skills, including virtual surgical procedures and specialized workshops held at the medical simulation center. The department further contributes to research and academic activities organized by the college’s Deanship of Graduate Studies and Development, supporting research excellence and continuous improvement in medical education.
