The Department of Biology at the Faculty of Science, University of Tabuk, participated in the World Environment Day events organized by the Faculty of Science under the theme “Your Impact is Green.” The participation reflected the university’s ongoing commitment to promoting environmental awareness, sustainability and social responsibility among students and community members.

The activities were held at the lobby of the Faculty of Pharmacy on Sunday, 3 May 2026, and continued at Tabuk Park Mall on 4–5 May 2026. The events formed part of the department’s community engagement initiatives aimed at enhancing environmental awareness, fostering sustainable practices and highlighting the role of biological sciences in protecting natural resources and serving society.

The Department of Biology’s participation was guided by its mission to promote scientific literacy, raise awareness of environmental challenges and contribute to building a society that recognizes the importance of environmental conservation. Through its exhibits and activities, the department emphasized the significance of biodiversity conservation, ecological balance, pollution reduction and addressing environmental change.

The event was attended by the Head of the Department of Biology, Dr. Ra'fat Affan, alongside faculty members, university students, school students and visitors from the local community.

The department showcased a variety of scientific and interactive exhibits that combined education, awareness and research. These included presentations on the roles of plants, animals and microorganisms in maintaining ecological balance and sustaining ecosystems. Visitors also explored plant adaptation mechanisms and water transport systems, highlighting differences between species inhabiting desert and humid environments.

In addition, the department presented scientific demonstrations illustrating the environmental and health impacts of microplastics and bioaccumulation. A special exhibit titled “The Resilience of the Red Sea” highlighted the importance of marine biodiversity, current environmental challenges and conservation strategies. The pavilion also featured a scientific poster on the use of microalgae as biofertilizers and a demonstration of water-quality assessment techniques, emphasizing the importance of conserving water resources.

Environmental awareness activities addressed the issue of noise pollution through educational posters and interactive demonstrations explaining its environmental and health impacts, as well as practical mitigation measures. Another presentation explored the mammoth, examining its ecological significance and its relationship to climate change and environmental balance.

As part of the research component of the exhibition, Dr. Dhafer Al-Bakri and his students presented a project entitled “A Study of the Distribution of Mistletoes in Wadi Al-Shafa, Saudi Arabia.” The study investigated the distribution patterns of mistletoe species and their relationships with environmental variables and elevation gradients through field surveys and statistical analyses.

Students from the Protected Areas Management Program also contributed by presenting information about wildlife conservation through photographic displays and wildlife-monitoring cameras used to observe organisms in their natural habitats. The pavilion further included educational activities for children, such as interactive games and puzzles, along with the distribution of brochures and awareness materials focused on environmental sustainability, natural resource conservation and biodiversity protection.

The Department of Biology’s pavilion attracted considerable engagement from visitors. Interactive exhibits and educational activities successfully simplified environmental concepts and promoted scientific knowledge in an engaging and accessible manner. Department students played a key role in delivering scientific explanations and interacting with attendees throughout the event.

This participation reflects the Department of Biology’s commitment to community service, environmental stewardship and scientific outreach, while supporting the vision of the University of Tabuk to advance sustainable development and foster a knowledge-based society that is aware of environmental issues and committed to environmental responsibility.
