The Department of Biology at the Faculty of Science actively participated in the World Water Day event organized by the Faculty of Science at the University of Tabuk on Wednesday, April 8, 2026. The event took place in the lobby of the Faculty of Pharmacy from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM, the event was coducted under the theme “Where Water Flows, Equality Grows.” It aimed to promote environmental awareness and sustainability, aligning with the department’s commitment to social responsibility and scientific outreach.
The department’s involvement reflects its ongoing dedication to disseminating scientific knowledge, emphasizing the critical importance of water resources and their relationship to biodiversity, and highlighting the role of life sciences in addressing contemporary environmental challenges.
The event was attended by Dr. Ra’fat Affan, Head of the Biology Department; Dr. Nasser Al-Omrani, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Science for Academic Affairs; Dr. Olayan Al-Balawi, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Science for Graduate Studies and Development; along with faculty members and students.
The Department of Biology’s participation featured three integrated scientific sections that reflected the synergy between education, research, and practical application:
• Microplastic Pollution and Its Impact on Microbial Diversity
This section addressed one of the most pressing environmental challenges related to water pollution. It explored the concept of microplastics, outlining their sources and widespread presence in aquatic environments. It also highlighted their impact on microbial communities and overall ecological balance. Demonstrations illustrated the role of microorganisms in plastic degradation and their interactions with pollutants within aquatic ecosystems.
• Scientific Poster Presentation
This section featured an advanced research poster on Harmful Algal Blooms, titled “Next Generation Sequencing–Driven Genomic and Transcriptomic Profiling of Karenia spp.”. The presentation highlighted advanced genomic technologies such as Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) and RNA sequencing (RNA-Seq), emphasizing their applications in studying harmful algal species. It also addressed their impact on water quality and marine ecosystems, mechanisms of toxin production and transfer through food chains, and potential implications for human health.
• Water Conservation and Quality Awareness
This section focused on raising awareness about water as a vital resource for life and emphasized the importance of its conservation. It highlighted the risks associated with invisible pollutants, such as microplastics and their cumulative effects on living organisms. The exhibit also underscored the importance of responsible water use and the adoption of sustainable environmental practices.
The department’s participation attracted significant engagement from visitors. The interactive presentations enhanced public awareness of water-related environmental issues and deepened scientific understanding. Notably, students played an active role in organizing the sections and delivering explanations, demonstrating strong scientific communication skills and a commitment to community service.
This participation reaffirms the Department of Biology’s dedication to community engagement, environmental stewardship and the dissemination of scientific knowledge, in alignment with the University of Tabuk’s vision for sustainable development. It also highlights the integration of education, research, and community service in addressing pressing environmental challenges.
