The Faculty of Science at the University of Tabuk, represented by the Department of Biology, organized an educational event entitled “Plant Diversity Horizons” on Tuesday, February 11, 2026, in the lobby of the Faculty of Pharmacy. The event was held as part of the Faculty’s community responsibility initiatives aimed at raising awareness about the importance of plant diversity and its vital role in sustaining ecosystems.
The event sought to highlight the environmental, economic, and scientific value of plants, showcase research and applied aspects in plant sciences and introduce effective strategies for conserving natural resources while promoting sustainability concepts.
The event was inaugurated in the presence of:
Dr. Raafat Al-Qurashi, Head of the Department of Biology
Dr. Alian Al-Balawi, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Science for Graduate Studies and Development
Dr. Abeer Al-Mutairi, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Science for Female Students
Dr. Siham Al-Balawi, Supervisor of the Department of Biology for Female Students
A number of faculty members and students
The event was organized under the supervision of Dr. Fawzia Al-Balawi, Head of the Scientific Activities and Community Service Committee in the Biology Department, with the distinguished participation of the department's faculty and staff. The event included several specialized scientific displays, most notably:
The event featured several specialized scientific booths that provided interactive and educational experiences for attendees:
Plant Microscopes Booth
This booth displayed live plant slides, allowing visitors to observe plant anatomical structures and examine plant tissues firsthand. The practical experience strengthened the connection between theoretical knowledge and laboratory application while enhancing observation and scientific analysis skills.
Extinct and Endangered Plants Corner
Presented as an engaging scientific competition, this corner explored the causes behind the decline of certain plant species and the environmental factors influencing their survival. It emphasized the importance of preserving plant genetic diversity and supporting environmental protection efforts.
Traditional Agriculture and Hydroponics Corner
This section provided a scientific comparison between traditional farming and hydroponic systems, highlighting differences in water consumption, production efficiency and the role of modern agricultural technologies in promoting sustainability and enhancing food security.
Seed Bank Corner
This booth showcased the importance of conserving plant genetic resources. It presented seed processing procedures and storage mechanisms according to scientific standards that ensure long-term sustainability. The role of seed banks in preserving global plant diversity for future generations was strongly emphasized.
Scientific Posters and Master’s Research Corner
Master’s students presented their research findings in plant diversity, environmental adaptation and biological applications. The poster presentations offered attendees valuable insights into current scientific research and promoted a culture of innovation, academic dialogue and scholarly engagement.
The event also included:
Informational displays on plant biodiversity
Presentations on plant adaptation strategies in various environments
Exhibits on algae and their practical applications
Displays of aromatic plants and natural oils
Models of plants with environmental and economic significance
The event concluded with expressions of gratitude to all participants and organizers for their contributions to the success of this scientific initiative. “Plant Diversity Horizons” reflects the commitment of the Department of Biology at the University of Tabuk to advancing knowledge, serving the community and reinforcing the principles of environmental sustainability.
