Biology Department Participates in Earth Day Event at the Faculty of Science

The Department of Biology at the Faculty of Science participated in an Earth Day event held on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, under the theme “Our Power, Our Planet.” This participation aimed to raise environmental awareness, strengthen sustainability concepts and highlight the role of life sciences in protecting natural resources, addressing environmental challenges and serving the community.

The department’s involvement reflects its commitment to disseminating scientific knowledge, engaging with contemporary environmental challenges and fostering a society that values environmental protection and the preservation of natural resources for future generations. 

The department showcased a variety of scientific and interactive exhibits that integrated education, awareness, and research. One exhibit focused on sustainability, highlighting the role of plants in maintaining ecological balance and supporting life. Another compared environmentally stable areas with regions affected by pollution, desertification and climate change, helping visitors appreciate the importance of sustainable practices.

A scientific display on plant adaptation and water transport illustrated how plants adapt to different environments and explained the mechanisms of water movement within them. It also compared plant characteristics in desert and humid environments, highlighting their adaptability and vital role in sustaining life.

In the research section, a poster on soil seed banks was presented, emphasizing their importance in conserving plant diversity and supporting natural vegetation regeneration. The poster also included findings from a field study conducted in the Tabuk region, demonstrating how environmental factors influence seed distribution and ecosystem sustainability.

An awareness exhibit highlighted the beneficial role of microorganisms in the environment, including their ability to decompose pollutants, support recycling processes, improve soil quality, purify water and maintain ecological balance.

Additionally, the department showcased an educational exhibit on environmental sustainability and sustainable development in parks and gardens, underlining the importance of green spaces in enhancing quality of life, strengthening the human–environment relationship and recognizing the contributions of women to environmental initiatives.

The Department’s booth attracted significant interest from visitors and students. The exhibits effectively presented complex environmental concepts in an engaging and accessible manner, while students actively participated by explaining scientific ideas and interacting with attendees, demonstrating strong communication skills and community engagement. 

Overall, this participation underscored the Biology Department’s dedication to social responsibility, environmental awareness and the advancement of scientific knowledge, aligning with the University of Tabuk’s broader vision of achieving sustainable development and fostering an environmentally conscious, knowledge-based society.
