Genetic abnormalities in the etiology of Stroke of Saudi Arabian populations The risk factors associated with stroke include diabetes, arterial hypertension, hyperlipidaemia, smoking, age, and microvascular rupture along with comorbidities like sickle cell disease Some risks are unexplained, and there have been suggestions that genetic factors may play a role The genomewide association study (GWAS) approach has attempted to gain evidence for this, as the approach has similarly found evidence for genetic links with other cardiovascular diseases including diabetes, heart disease and hypertension Several novel genetic variants that were first linked with other cardiovascular diseases have now been acknowledged as also having links to strokes as well However, it has so far been difficult to ascertain the validity and levels of clinical applicability of the links between strokes and these genetic factors Further investigation in the genetic context will therefore be useful for clinicians not only in terms of obtaining a deeper understanding of susceptibility of stroke-related factors in the KSA, but also in determining patients’ response to certain therapies and eventual outcomes
